Heat Exchangers
Heat exchangers are mechanical devices designed to transfer the heat of one fluid to another fluid in an efficient manner using a solid surface as a divider between the two fluids. The heat being transferred can be either absorbed or dissipated.
The efficiency of these devices is rated according to how much of a temperature change both liquids experience. The size of exchanger needed is determined by three factors:
- How much temperature change is needed
- How fast the heat change needs to be accomplished
- How much pressure drop is allowed.
Heat exchangers are incredibly efficient when it comes to recovering wasted heat and making it available again. Heat exchangers are used for radiant floor heating, central and geothermal heating, and for heating hot water in homes. They are found in boilers, furnaces, and air conditioning units.
Maintenance of Heat Exchangers
If you suspect damage has been done to your heat exchanger, it's best to call a professional HVAC technician to come examine the unit and do any maintenance necessary. However, as a home owner, you can examine your heat exchanger for cracks or discoloration.
Other signs of damage may be evident in the case of flooding or leaking from a humidifier installed on top of a heat exchanger. Most importantly, your HVAC technician will test the air for carbon monoxide leaks. Most repairs necessary are beyond the scope of the average home owner and will require professional attention.
